Ride with us through one of New Jersey’s most beautiful natural habitats.
If you’ve been on one of our Columbia Trail rides through Ken Lockwood Gorge, then you know what an amazing natural environment this ride will cover.
Our ride will begin at the Columbia Trail parking area in High Bridge. We’ll head out of High Bridge on the Columbia rail trail that will take us through the Gorge about 50 feet above the Raritan River. After we pass through Califon and reach the Vernon Road parking lot, we’ll turn around and trace back along River Road. That will take us back through Califon and the Gorge at river level.
Along the ride we’ll see vintage buildings like the old Califon train station and dozens of early 20th century homes. Once in the Gorge we’ll see fly fisherman down in the water and, very likely, some exotic wildlife like herons or egrets.
The full ride is 14 miles. More than nine of those miles will be on hard-packed gravel trails, so this ride is not recommended for road bikes. We’ll find at least four places to stop, for 10 to 15 minutes each stop, to explore locations and take pictures.
